Merlin tensed a little at his words hoping he wouldn’t notice, he was usually fine about the whole denial game about actually being a sorcerer. Somehow managing to get away with it and live after having been accused of it as well. It never seemed to help his nerves, for all he knew it could happen again and he wouldn’t be so lucky this time and god forbid Arthur ever found out. He could never let that happen, he just couldn’t. Merlin couldn’t bare the thought of how his friend would abandon him if such a secret ever came out out. He’d be abandoned, and in all honesty Merlin was more scared of loosing his friend than dying for what he was. He shook the thoughts from his head giving a good laugh with the other, hiding the distraught thoughts filling his head. “Of course not, I guess I just must be getting better at my job finally.”
He stood there listening to the prince once again, taking the few steps between them to fill his glass not once but twice. Arthur sure could drink, a lot better than Merlin that was for sure. Not to say the young servant didn’t enjoy it but it wasn’t long before he was down when he did and of course he’d just had to be offered some. He couldn’t refuse nor did he want to for that matter. Merlin couldn’t remember the last time he’d just been allowed to be around his friend and relax it was a nice change of pace. Filling the glass he set the jug down taking it and raising it slightly to Arthur with a smile. “Not only am I getting better at my job but you’re learning to be less of a prat.” He chuckled and took a drink, you’d think he’d learn to stop insulting the prince by now but it was never going to happen. He enjoyed riling him up with such petty stupid names such as prat.
He scoffed lightly at the name, though not exactly sober enough to care too much. Though enough to be a, well.. total prat about it. “Yes, and you still seem to get stupider by the day.” He simple replied with a few nasty comments and shrugged off what the other had said, taking a sip of his drink. “Tell me Merlin, how exactly do you manage that one? You’d think by now you’d reach the limit of idiocy,” Arthur gave a small smirk. “I hope for your sake Gaius is looking into that as well.” He chucked a bit once again, continuing to joke around with his friend while he finished off his dinner.
Soon afterwards the prince had fished his dinner, plus a few more cups of cider as well. He pushed the plate away from himself and stood, stretching out his arms. “Leave it,” he ordered, not wanting the other to bother with the dishes at the moment. “You’re probably too intoxicated to make it down to the kitchen anyways, considering what a light weight you are. We can’t have you getting lost or anything,” Really meaning, he didn’t want his friend to leave at all.
And it was apparent the prince was a bit too drunk as well, seeing as he couldn’t eat his meal without making a mess of himself. Glancing down, he scowled at the few small stains on his shirt. “Outrageous,” Arthur huffed under his breath, walking away from the table being sure to bring his drink with him. “This is no way for a prince to look, not at all.” Setting his drink down on top if the dresser, the blond disappeared behind the changing screen. “Merlin!” He called out, “Retrieve me a new shirt, this one’s dirty. You’ll need to wash it later.” Later, of course. He couldn’t have the boy, who’s accompany he enjoyed so much, leaving just yet. Shredding off his filthy shirt, Arthur tossed it over the screen, aiming for his servant. He reached a hand out, waiting for the other to hand him the new article of clothing.
New shirt on, Arthur reappeared. Grabbing his cup from the dresser and being sure to finish it off as he stubbled over to the table where the jug of cider sat. He poured himself a new cup. Realizing that he had actually done something himself for once instead of commanding the dark haired boy to do it for him, the prince chuckled. Turning and leaning back against the table as he sipped at his drink. “I do believe you’re supposed to be doing this for me. Quit your slacking,” he joked, laughing to himself once again and finishing off the rest of his cup.
Merlin gave a small nod, picking the jug up once again to poor the prince a glass. He could tell the other had already been drinking but of course that was to be expected. He took a few stops back still holding the jug at rolling his eyes at the witty remarks. He wasn’t a complete moron all the times he tried to do his best every day but something always ended up happening preventing him from doing so and then Arthur would assume he’d been lazing around all day. Of course he couldn’t deny he had done so a few times. He chuckled a little though, regardless of how stupid the princes comments had been. “No he has not but I’m sure he’s still working on it for my sake.”
Honestly, he wouldn’t put it past Gaius to do so. He tended to skip out on some of his duties to the older man as well when he was off helping Arthur or being distracted by whatever it was that seemed to distract him for the day but even with out that. Helping two people everyday, it’s a lot of work and it took a lot out of the poor boy. Gaius still seemed to put up with Merlin and his slacking ways regardless and he was very grateful.
Arthur raised an eyebrow, chewing another mouth full of food. “Oh?” He questioned. “A bit surprising that he hasn’t come up with something yet, considering how well you’ve managed to complete your chores today. What’s your secret? You aren’t using sorcery, are you?” The prince gave the other a serious look, only able to keep it for a few moments before bursting out into laughter. That was just hilarious, really. Someone like Merlin being a sorcerer. It cracked Arthur up, the many times the servant boy had been accused of using magic. It was simply ridiculous.
“Ah, well. He had better hurry along with it then. It’s only a matter of time before you fall back into your habits of sacking off. We can’t have that happening,” Arthur stated and went back to eating his dinner. It was true enough that Merlin was probably the worst servant the prince had ever had, but at the same time he was the best. The dark haired boy was a lot more than just a servant to Arthur, he was a friend and indispensable. Though Arthur may complain about his laziness and lack of effort quite a bit, Merlin had done more for the blond than any other servant ever had. The boy always had his back, no matter what. Even when Arthur assured his friend he was not needed, Merlin always showed up to help out in someway. Though the prince would rarely ever say how much he cared for the other.
Shaking his thoughts away, Arthur held his cup up once again. Drinking it down as fast as the cup had been filled. Demanding another glass full, though he set the cup aside once full rather than immediately drinking it like the times before. “You may have a drink, if you’d like.” Arthur offered. “I mean, since you’ve completed your duties without me stressing out over it. Surely you deserve a glass.” This really was just was his way of telling the other boy that he wished to spend time with him. Time when they weren’t on some bizarre quest or saving someone or something of another. Arthur picked up an empty cup, holding it out to his friend, awaiting him to accept the offer.
Hunting. Oh how Merlin hated everything that it was. He hated how they killed such innocent things for fun it was something he couldn’t quiet comprehend the appeal of but it didn’t matter. He had no choice other than to be dragged along with Arthur and the other knights carrying supplies and at times some of the catches of the day if they were small enough. Today though, they managed a few large deer and Arthur seemed pleased. Why wouldn’t he be, he was the complete opposite of Merlin when it came to such things. Of course he’d be happy to be able to kill such beautiful animals for fun.
The ride back to the castle was surprisingly quiet, much appreciated for the young sorcerer. Doing his best to keep his eyes off the animals, he honestly couldn’t stand to see the dead carcases as is.
Not long later they were within the towns walls once again, his duties taking up his time. Returning the equipment to it’s rightful place, horses back in the stable. They knights along with Arthur had taken the deer off on their own leaving the dark haired boy on his own to tend to everything else. He couldn’t complain though, this was nothing compared to the rest of the work of his day which thankfully he’d finished what he’d been asked already. Did that mean he was free to do as he pleased? No, of course not. Arthur would see to it he had more of course, he usually did.
With everything taken care of Merlin set off with one last duty for the time being, it was dinner time or close to. Stopping by the kitchen he’d grabbed the princes food and a jug of cider. He could at least help his friend had a little celebration for himself even with as much distaste he had for the reason behind said “celebration.” With everything in hand he made his way to Arthurs’ room juggling the objects in his hands as he opened the door, place them both of the table of his room with a smile.
Today’s hunting trip had been glorious, the best Arthur had had in a while. The young prince took pride in his hunting abilities. So it was to no surprise how filled with enjoyment he was. Ego booming as he gloated to the other knights while they packed up and prepared to return to the castle. The ride back was quiet, unlike it had been minutes ago. Which usually Arthur wouldn’t mind a bit of peace and quiet, he usually never got a chance for any of it, but this was just boring. Though he had survived through the silent and outmost dull trip, and they had finally arrived back in Camelot. Arthur got off his horse looking over his ‘trophies’, hands on his hips and grinning. He never understood what Merlin’s problem was with such a skillful sport like Hunting. What was there not to be proud of?
Ah, speaking of Merlin, the prince turned his attention to his servant. “Make sure you get the horses back to the stable, make sure they’re fed as well,” He ordered the dark haired boy, shooing him off with a long list of other chores Arthur expected to be done by the time he returned to his quarters this evening.
Off with the other knighst who had joined him in the hunting trip, they dealt with the deer. Taking the time to celebrate a bit on their own. Joking around and reminiscing about old times, Arthur and his fellow knights shared a few drinks. What was a celebration without that, after all? After a few drinks— or it might have been more than a few— the buzzed prince made his way up to his room. Which was clean! Removing his armor and kicking off his boots he made a note to himself to congratulate Merlin on not being a complete buffoon for once and getting his work done.
It was around dinner time when Merlin had finally made an appearance again, and look at that! He came baring food. “Merlin! Right on time,” The prince grinned up at the other as the food was placed in front of him. Oh, and a jug of cider. Excellent! Arthur held up his cup, “Go on. Pour me a glass.” He commanded. Gulping the cider down after his loyal servant had done the task. Arthur set the cup down once empty, searching his brain. The was something he had wanted to tell the other, now what was it? Looking around his room, it struck him. “Ah, yes!” He exclaimed, glancing back at Merlin. “I wanted to congratulate you. You’ve completed all your duties without me having to holler at you repeatedly,” Arthur chuckled lightly, taking a bite of the meal in front of him. “And look at this room. Spotless! I’m assuming Gaius has finally found a cure for laziness?”
Well, alright. If you say so.
.. What’s wrong? If something’s bothering you Merlin, you know you can tell me. We are friends after all.
